As Ladybird says when the adventure aboard the Giant Peach begins, "We are about to visit the most marvellous places and see the most wonderful things". While we can't physically explore new places or see new things, there's nothing stopping us from going on an adventure through the pages of a book and what better time to start this adventure than Book Week.
Here are our four tips for celebrating Book Week (22 - 27 August), safely from home.
Read a book by an Aussie author or illustrator
Ever since 1945, Book Week has been a time to celebrate Australian authors and illustrators as well as highlight the importance of reading. Our first tip therefore is to read! The 2021 Book Week shortlist is in high demand so we recommend taking a look at our curated list of previous winners. You can place a reservation and we will deliver through Library2U.
Have a special Story Time from home
You can watch stories from the shortlist in Story Box Library and follow along as the stories are read by famous faces from Australia and New Zealand. Don't forget to have your library card number and pin handy before you jump into the world of stories.
Get creative with a Book Week activity
Each story in the Book Week playlist through Story Box Library, comes with tailored activities you can do from home. The activities differ for each story however there is scope to adapt the activity to suit children of a variety of ages and abilities. They can create miniature furniture out of egg cartons, a rockpool in a container, a flying paper bird and more. To find the Activity Time instructions, select the Activities tab on each story page.
Dress up!
Dress up as your favourite book character and parade down your hallway, on the driveway or in the backyard! We promise we will too.
