Every 4 days, a woman is killed because of family and domestic violence [1]. In 2024, the Prime Minister declared family and domestic violence as a national emergency, highlighting the urgency of this crisis.
As the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence begins on Monday 25 November, it is a call to our entire Northern Beaches community to step up: family and domestic violence is an issue we all have a role in addressing.
Family and domestic violence affects people of all ages, backgrounds and genders. Everyone deserves a life free from fear. By recognising the signs of abuse, we can all work together to support those affected and foster a safer community.
The 7 key warning signs to watch for are:
- Physical injuries: Unexplained bruises, cuts or injuries are red flags you shouldn’t ignore. Frequent injuries with inconsistent explanations may be a cause for concern.
- Withdrawal: Victims often isolate themselves from their loved ones. If a family member or friend who was once social and outgoing becomes withdrawn, it could be a sign that something is wrong.
- Emotional abuse: Listen out for threats, insults, constant monitoring, excessive jealousy, manipulation, humiliation, intimidation, and dismissiveness. Look out for signs of anxiety, depression or unexplained changes in mood.
- Control and manipulation: Excessive control and manipulation by a partner can come in many different forms: controlling finances, monitoring phone calls, and cutting off their family and friends.
- Financial abuse: If a loved one has restricted access to money, or manipulates their financial decisions, this can be financial abuse.
- Fear: Victims may show signs of fear or anxiety around their partner. If you notice a loved one consistently expressing fear of a partner’s reaction this could be a sign of an abusive relationship.
- Unexplained absences: A victim may try to conceal signs of abuse by not attending work or social events.
Victim/survivors of family and domestic violence often face many barriers to escaping abuse. Be a safe space for them and where you can, tell them about local support services that can help. They’re available on our website, where you can also find links to resources on how to support victim/survivors. Information about local support services is also available via the Northern Beaches Domestic Violence Network Facebook page or website.
Join us in-person during the 16 Days of Activism at local events and stand together against family and domestic violence. From memorial walks to barbeque breakfasts, each event is a meaningful way to raise awareness and show support for those affected. Let’s work together to create a safer future for everyone.
If you or anyone you know needs support, call 1800 RESPECT.
