Cuttlefish Cabbage Tree Bay
Wednesday, 29 May 2024

Australian animals are infamous for their attention-grabbing tactics when it comes to mating; boy bowerbirds adorn their nests with blue detritus and peacock spiders bust some unique dance moves (look it up, we dare you!).

But we’re calling it - the cuttlefish of Cabbage Tree Bay might just be the biggest playboys of them all.

Throughout the year the Aquatic Reserve between Shelly Beach and Fairy Bower is a literal superhighway of marine life.  But from now until July, it’s the flamboyant male Giant Australian Cuttlefish who take centre stage, drawn to the temperate reef environment in search of the perfect partner.

Given that the lady cuttlefish regularly swap partners, competition amongst the guys is fierce, and it has led to complex breeding behaviours. Their showy tactics include a jaw-dropping ability to instantly change their colour, shape and texture; it’s shape shifting personified!

For those keen to spot these unique creatures in their full romantic swing, the best time is generally in the mornings before the winds pick up, although they’re on the prowl for the girls throughout the day.
