The single-use plastic bag ban is here! From 1 June, most lightweight plastic bags will no longer be available.

Plastic packaging and single-use plastic items make up 60% of all litter in NSW - a harsh and shocking fact that is about to change direction. This ban on single-use plastic bags is the first step in making sure our oceans, natural environment and wildlife aren’t as threatened by plastic in the future.

So many of us on the Northern Beaches are already in the habit of BYO bags to the supermarket - keep it up and BYO reusable bag wherever you go!

If you notice a local business still using lightweight plastic bags, be kind and let them know about the ban. The NSW Government has resources online to help everyone make the transition.

Lightweight plastic bags are the first in many single-use plastics being banned in NSW this year. From 1 November, several other food service items will be phased out too:

• Single-use plastic straws*, stirrers and cutlery
• Single-use plastic plates and bowls
• Expanded polystyrene foodware

*Exemptions will apply for providing a plastic straw for people with a disability or medical need.

Instead of waiting until November, now’s the time to start creating good habits by bringing your reusable items everywhere and nudging your favourite local businesses to do the same so they’re ready for the second phase of the ban in November.
