The stunning new courtyard at Long Reef Surf Life Saving Club has been recognised for its outstanding design.
Designed by TYRRELLSTUDIO as part of Council’s surf club rebuild, the courtyard received an Award of Excellence for Small Projects at the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) 2023 NSW State Awards.
The courtyard is central to the new surf life saving club and is designed to intersect community activity with the natural environment.
The design is both beautiful and functional, with innovative solutions to natural environmental challenges.
The seats act as scaffolds supporting the dune system and concrete blades prevent sand from being blown across paths and the café area. Water is collected from a building roof and reticulated to dune gardens through a custom brass downpipe, bowl and rill.
Pavers were specifically selected for the coastal conditions and drought tolerant plants provide habitat for local ecology.
The project team included TYRRELLSTUDIO, Adriano Pupilli Architects, Partridge Engineers Structural Engineers, Stantec Civil Engineer and Grindley Builders.
The new surf club opened in February. Designed by award winning Adriano Pupilli Architects, it includes the two-storey surf club fitted out with a gym, first aid room, training rooms, function space, and surf club storage as well as a separate public amenities block, a new café and community storage lockers (including for Council Lifeguards and the local Board Riders Club).
Local artist Leesa Knights was also selected to design a two-dimensional artwork that integrates into tiered concrete seating adjacent to the building.
