Art-lovers who have been flocking to see Manly Art Gallery & Museum’s blockbuster exhibition North Head Project (featuring Sydney Harbour’s dramatic gateway headland at North Head Sanctuary and the historic Quarantine Station) can now enjoy first-hand many of the same evocative and culturally charged features that inspired the artists.
The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service, Q Station Manly, in conjunction with Manly Art Gallery & Museum, is hosting the North Head Discovery Day (10am - 4pm, Sunday 21 January 2018) in which arts, nature, history and ideas will come together.
“Participants will experience unique programs and events at the North Head Sanctuary and Q Station,” said Senior Curator at Manly Art Gallery & Museum, Katherine Roberts.
“Many of the artists taking part in the North Head Project exhibition will be presenting talks and workshops on the day, too.”
Participating artists include Helen Earl, Craig Handley, Nathalie Hartog-Gautier, Nick Hollo, Chris Langlois, Susan Milne, Julie Nettleton and Hobie Porter.
The North Head Project exhibition focuses on the area’s complex Aboriginal and cultural heritage, its environmental significance, military history and unique migration and quarantine stories.
“Bringing artists together for the project at a camp on North Head created a real and palpable energy and frisson among the group,” said Katherine.
“The artists who came to North Head for the first time, especially, found it deeply evocative and moving.”
