An extra category, Community Group of the Year, will be added to the Australia Day Citizen of the Year Awards under changes approved by Northern Beaches Council.
Council, at its meeting yesterday evening, adopted proposed changes to the Community Services Awards policy.
The changes also include allowing non-Australian citizens to become eligible to win Outstanding Community Service Awards and inviting the current Citizen of the Year to be on the judging panel for the following year’s awards.
Council’s approval of the changes comes after the draft policy had been on public exhibition for a month, and largely positive feedback recorded.
Mayor Sue Heins said the updated Policy would further enhance the inclusiveness of Council’s important recognition program.
“By recognising and celebrating the outstanding volunteers in our community, Council is demonstrating the vitally important role of volunteering in delivering programs, services, events, and activities.
“These build social connections and allow people to participate in community life.
“Showcasing these incredible members of our community motivates and inspires others to volunteer, which will further improve inclusion and connection on the Northern Beaches.”
The Community Service Awards Policy provides a framework for Council when delivering the annual Australia Day Citizen of the Year and Outstanding Community Service Awards.
