A chorus of colour is splashing across the Northern Beaches to celebrate Sydney WorldPride 2023, with stunning murals on the Corso and a rainbow arch on East Esplanade.
Northern Beaches Council is rolling out temporary artworks across our public outdoor areas, civic buildings and galleries, with banners and window displays adding to the chorus of colour. Council has also commissioned two artworks for Manly as part of Rainbow Cities program.
Beautiful temporary mural artworks by Meg Minkley are on display on the Corso, and Skye Burton's Perspex arch has been installed on East Esplanade.
“We pride ourselves on having an inclusive and welcoming community that celebrates diversity,” Northern Beaches Council CEO Ray Brownlee said.
“We have a range of programs and events as part of Sydney WorldPride 2023 and this colourful display of artworks across our public spaces is just one of the wonderful ways to celebrate our diversity.
“These spectacular works by local artists will delight people of all ages – and visitors to Manly will be able to capture memorable photos in front of the colourful murals or under the rainbow arch.”
As an imaginative painter of figurative works, Meg Minkley is deeply inspired by her wonderful imagination and her local area. Her creative career continues to find her working to harness the full spectrum of colour and her murals planned for Manly are no different. They’re vibrant and inspired by the extensive flora and fauna found on the Northern Beaches.
Artist Skye Burton will also add colour to Manly. Skye is a proud Wiradjuri woman and emerging contemporary Aboriginal artist. She is also a member of the LGBTQIA+ community of the Northern Beaches.
Skye has created a large Perspex rainbow arch anchored with two concrete clouds, positioned adjacent to Manly Wharf, looking out across Manly Cove.
The rainbow is painted in traditional rainbow colours and includes contemporary Aboriginal art, telling the story of Manly and the connections people have with the community. Visitors will be able to stand beside the arch to create a memorable Instagram moment.
Complementing these pieces, Manly Business Chamber has commissioned rainbow chalk art for the wharf forecourt, supported by Council's placemaking grants.
