Northern Beaches Council plans to upgrade key footpaths, pedestrian links and facilities in Manly, which will significantly improve access in and around the area for all ages and mobility.
The Walk Manly Draft Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan focuses on the Manly beachfront, Manly Town Centre and Manly Wharf areas, and key pedestrian links to facilities such as the Manly Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Swim Centre, Manly Art Gallery & Museum and Manly Library.
Northern Beaches Council General Manager Environment & Infrastructure Ben Taylor said the plan takes into account all existing pedestrian facilities, identifies future pedestrian needs and priorities and aims to deliver consistent standard across pedestrian facilities.
“The Walk Manly plan will help Council manage future pedestrian demands in the Manly village and neighbourhoods and enhances pedestrian access for all ages and mobility,” said Mr Taylor.
In developing the plan, Council consulted with local schools, churches, clubs, local businesses and residents to determine broad views, concerns and ideas relating to pedestrian facilities. Council’s initial online survey has attracted some 102 responses alone.
“Walk Manly will benefit the wider local community by creating an active and walkable neighbourhood and village.
“By providing improved walking opportunities we can encourage residents to shift from cars to active and sustainable travel.
“This in turn reduces parking and traffic congestion and benefits the environment through reduced car exhaust emissions,” said Mr Taylor.
The majority of the works identified within the Walk Manly study are to be absorbed within existing maintenance budgets and grants.
Larger scale works will be the subject of further investigation and future funding applications to the NSW State Government.
