Northern Beaches Council will nominate the Manly Warringah War Memorial Park for the prestigious Australian National Heritage List.
Affectionately known as Manly Dam, the park has long been a celebrated attraction on the peninsula after it was first opened it 1892 as a water supply dam for residents in the Manly area.
Council decided to nominate the park for the National Heritage List due to its national significance as a war memorial, the dam wall representing a high degree of technical achievement and the fact the site contains endangered and threatened species which need to be preserved.
Mayor Michael Regan said he was pleased Council would put forward a nomination for this significant area of the Northern Beaches.
“It is a very exclusive list to potentially be a part of, joining the likes of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and North Head,’’ he said.
“Manly Dam is an institution on the northern beaches, is popular with the local community and remains an important site for veterans.
“It also boasts rich Indigenous history and is the home of threatened plant and animal species.”
Public consultation will be sought as part of the listing process.
Manly Dam was listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register in 1999.
