A massive excavation project to open the mouth of Narrabeen Lagoon is now complete, greatly reducing the risk of flooding and ensuring the lagoon is open for public use just in time for the school holidays.

Mayor Michael Regan said it was great to see this significant project finished ahead of schedule despite recent challenging weather conditions.

“The excavation project removed up to 50,000m3 of sand from the eastern and western sides of the Ocean Street Bridge, which was then used to re-nourish Collaroy-Narrabeen Beach further south,” Mayor Regan said.

“This project will assist to keep the lagoon entrance open for a number of years, reducing the risk of flooding and improving the appearance of the water at the lagoon entrance which is a popular local swimming spot.

“It also helps improve sand cover further down the beach.”

Mayor Regan said an excavation of this size is usually only undertaken every four years or so but low rainfall and significant swells had built up the lagoon much sooner in the cycle.  

Further widening at the mouth of the lagoon is planned in the lead up to the Christmas holidays however this will not impact access or public use of the area.
