Mona Vale resident Kyle Shilling joins the cast of Black Cockatoo, a production inspired by the true story of legendary First Nations cricketer Johnny Mullagh and Australia’s first-ever international cricket team, playing at Glen Street Theatre from 11 – 15 May.

Funny and incredibly moving, Black Cockatoo is a new artistic collaboration between iconic Australian writer Geoffrey Atherden (Mother and Son) and former Sydney Festival Artistic Director Wesley Enoch (Black Diggers).

A Northern Beaches local, Kyle feels fortunate to be part of an all First Nations cast in a production written and directed by such huge Australian talents. “This is such an important story, but it is also full of laughs and tenderness; a real joy to be part of. Even though it is part of a national tour, I am really looking forward to the Glen Street Theatre run.”

Black Cockatoo is based on the voyage to England made by Australia’s first international cricket team over 150 years ago. 13 Aboriginal men in Western Victoria, including Johnny Mullagh, picked up their cricket bats and amazed the English crowds with their astonishing talent, personality, and grit. This is not just a story about cricket, however, this is story of strength, resistance, hope, and possibility.
