Northern Beaches Council is inviting community feedback on a proposal to rename a section of the Palm Beach Walkway in honour of long-time Palm Beach resident Herminie Swainston.

Council last night endorsed the recommendation that the suggested name change should go on exhibition for public comment for 28 days.

The proposed name seeks to commemorate the late Herminie Swainston who was passionate about local natural history.

The section of the walkway proposed to be renamed is located at Observation Point.

Mayor Michael Regan encouraged the community to comment on the proposal.

“It is important that place names reflect the history and character of the local area,” Cr Regan said.

“We should recognise residents who have made a significant contribution to the community wherever we can.

“Hermine Swainston was an incredible contributor to the community with a passion for preservation and restoration of natural landscapes in the Palm Beach area where she lived for over six decades.”

Ms Swainston, who passed away in March 2018, was heavily involved in the planning and consultation of the Palm Beach walkway and a life of the ‘Bible Garden’ where she was active in its restoration.

The Palm Beach & Whale Beach Association has offered to fund an artwork in recognition of Ms Swainston, if the name change was supported.
