Manly Art Gallery & Museum is pleased to host Lost in Palm Springs, a multidisciplinary exhibition that celebrates the landscape and mid-century modern architecture found in the desert city of Palm Springs, California.

The exhibition will run from Friday 8 December to Sunday 25 February 2024. It is also part of Sydney Festival 2024.

Mayor Sue Heins said Lost in Palm Springs was a unique opportunity to experience works from 14 internationally recognised artists, photographers and thinkers from America and Australia.

“Curated by award-winning Australian writer and conceptual artist, Dr Greer Honeywill, Lost in Palm Springs features works that respond to and capture the unique characteristics of the city, its surroundings, and its Bauhaus style.”

Dr Greer Honeywill said: “I call ‘Lost in Palm Springs’ (the exhibition and the book), the project of a lifetime because that is what it has been to me over the last six years. And I have been blessed to work with extraordinary and inspirational artists.”

Lost in Palm Springs evolved as an exhibition in response to three artist research residencies undertaken by Dr Greer Honeywill in Palm Springs in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and research that continued in Australia between the residencies.

The exhibition explores the resurgence of mid-century modern architecture and design not only in Palm Springs and Joshua Tree in the US but also in Australian locations such as Mt Eliza, Canberra, Mermaid Beach, Sydney to name a few.

Lost in Palm Springs is a must-see exhibition for anyone interested in mid-century modern architecture and its influence on contemporary culture.

In this curator presentation, Dr Greer Honeywill will outline the themes of the Lost in Palm Springs exhibition and provide insight into the development of its curation. In 2015 Dr Greer Honeywill undertook a research trip to Palm Springs, California to look at the mid-century modern architecture for which the desert city is famed. Inspired by what she found she went on to complete three artist residencies – 2017, 2018 and 2019 – the findings of which have become part of the touring exhibition, Lost in Palm Springs.

Greer Honeywill lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. She holds a PhD in Fine Art from Monash University (2003) for which she was awarded the Mollie Holman Doctoral Medal for academic excellence, and she holds a PhD in Art from the School of Creative Arts, University of Tasmania (2015).
