An agreement between Northern Beaches Council and the NSW Department of Education will ensure a currently under-utilised school sportsfield in Curl Curl is upgraded and used as a full-sized field by both the department, including students of the Freshwater Senior Campus, during school hours and our community on afternoons and weekends.
Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan says under the license agreement, Council will make improvements to the existing field to bring it up to a higher standard and maintain the field.
“This is a win-win for the school and our community.
“There is a huge demand for sportsfields on the Northern Beaches and our obvious challenge is the limited space available to create new ones.
“Once the works are completed this will be a high-quality natural turf sportsfield for use by the school during the day and the rest of our community out of school hours. It’s a perfect solution and a great outcome for the community.
“Currently, we have a similar arrangement in place at the Narrabeen Sports High School which is very successful, and we are talking to the Department of Education about the opportunity to access other school sportsfields in the future,” Mayor Regan said.
Last week temporary fences have gone up and Council has taken possession of the site to start improvement works on the field.
The scope of works includes the hauling and placement of the excavated natural material, levelling it to achieve the desired grades, turfing and establishment.
It is anticipated the works will take approximately six weeks, weather permitting, and the field will remain closed for use until the beginning of 2022 to allow the new turf to establish. The field will then be available for local sport.
