Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan has kicked off a new push to rejuvenate the ageing Brookvale Oval.
Mayor Regan said Brookvale Oval is a highly valued community facility with dated facilities that have become very expensive to maintain.
“The draft Brookvale Structure Plan provides the vision for the future of Brookvale and there is an opportunity to position Brookvale Oval as a key centrepiece of the reinvention of this vital part of the Northern Beaches.
“The Australian Government has already committed $12.5 million in funding and the Sea Eagles have been working with the NSW Government on other potential funding sources.
“As a new Council with greater capacity to manage a significant project like this, now is the time to make this happen. We must unlock the potential sporting and other community users of this site. It is currently a massive burden on the ratepayer, and it is our duty to ensure we futureproof it and enhance the community benefits and opportunity,” Mayor Regan said.
Potential redevelopment could include new eastern and western stands incorporating a Centre of Excellence with an expanded range of community uses and mixed use development.
Initial steps will include community engagement based on a potential concept to be developed in consultation with the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles as Council’s major tenant.
“Myself and fellow Councillors are very keen to engage with the whole Northern Beaches community on the future of Brookie,” Mayor Regan said
A report on the outcome of community consultation will be provided in early 2018.
