Every eligible residential property can receive two parking permits and an additional one to use for visitors and tradespeople under the Northern Beaches Council’s new residential parking permit scheme for Manly.

Endorsed at Council’s meeting last Tuesday, CEO Ray Brownlee said the new parking framework was necessary, as permits allocated are more than three times the number of available spaces under the existing arrangement.

“Having taken all the feedback so far on board we believe the proposed scheme provides a better balance, ensuring less permits are issued, a crackdown on unofficial trading of permits and an improved parking experience for our residents,” Mr Brownlee said.

“Council has done significant consultation with the community on the draft framework including three information sessions in Manly, met with local community groups, distributed postcards during the peak at Manly Wharf and answered many online questions. Over 700 submissions have been received to date and 7,700 notification emails sent to recipients.”

Under the new parking framework, the two residential parking permits will be tied to vehicle registration (which will be printed on the permit) and a third will be available on application in certain circumstances, all linked to an address in the Manly scheme area.

The scheme will be reviewed in three years.

Also, Council will issue an annual multi-use permit on application. This replaces the proposal for visitor, tradesperson and carer permits. The multi-use permit will have a unique identifier to allow it to be cancelled should it be traded inappropriately. This permit will be reviewed in 12 months.

For eligible boarding houses, there will be one permit issued per bedroom. Permits will be introduced for business parking (one per business), for support worker vehicles, for car share schemes, and special permits for eligible charities, schools, volunteers and not for profit services.

The new parking arrangements will commence in Little Manly and Balgowlah on 1 April and will be gradually introduced to other areas in Manly over the course of the following six months.
