Northern Beaches Council will build new secure boat storage racks this year around Narrabeen Lagoon to address the increase in demand to store watercraft and reduce watercraft dumping, overcrowding and dangerous boat storage practises.

A similar boat storage system is in operation around Pittwater's foreshore and at Little Manly, Clontarf and Balgowlah.

Northern Beaches Council General Manager Mark Ferguson said the new facilities will benefit the community and help protect our sensitive Lagoon environment.

"The Lagoon foreshore has become so overcrowded that some boat owners have been unable to retrieve their boats because other boats have been stacked on top of theirs.

"Boats are also being dumped on top of sensitive riparian vegetation, damaging it. This vegetation is important for habitat and also for stabilising the bank of the Lagoon. The new facilities will help to address serious ecological damage that is currently undermining the Lagoon foreshore." Mr Ferguson said.

Northern Beaches Council will soon commence placing notices on watercraft around the Lagoon advising owners of the changes and inviting them to register their interest to purchase a permit and receive an allocated position. The current cost of the annual permit is $75.

Watercraft owners will need to complete an Expression of Interest form and email it to watercraft@northernbeaches.nsw.gov.au or contact Council's Property Officer on 9970 1111.

Once the facilities are in place, watercraft without permits will be removed and stored at Council's compound. Uncollected watercraft may be disposed of.

Council will also undertake a clean-up of the foreshore and will remove all old, broken and discarded vessels.
