Northern Beaches Council will host an exciting program of family-friendly events leading up to and on Saturday, 25 March to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the worldwide movement for the planet - ‘Earth Hour’.

Northern Beaches Council Deputy General Manager, Ben Taylor said there are number of Council events that the community can participate in during Earth Hour and discover the unique Northern Beaches environment.

“Switch off your lights at home between 8.30pm and 9.30pm and join us at one of our fun-filled activities to celebrate our planet and all the great work people are doing to protect it.

“This Australian initiative is now truly a global effort focusing attention on the threat of climate change, with people in countries around the world switching off their lights for one hour on Saturday, 25 March,” Mr Taylor said.

The concept of Earth Hour began as a World Wildlife Fund initiative in Sydney in 2007 when approximately 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses took part in a symbolic display of commitment to take action against climate change.

Council has supported Earth Hour each year since its inception by hosting local Earth Hour events for the community.

“As Earth Hour is a symbolic hour of unity calling for responsible action to address climate change, our responsibility is to ensure that we act sustainably to reduce the burning of fossil fuels; which are currently the source of 94 per cent of Australia’s energy.*

“Everyone can make a difference by reducing and being more efficient with energy use and investing in or switching to renewable energy technologies,” he said.
