Northern Beaches’ residents are being encouraged to sell unwanted goods at garage sales first, before leaving them out for Bulky Goods Clean Up.
Northern Beaches Council Deputy General Manager Ben Taylor said the Second Hand Saturday initiative is designed to reduce the amount of these goods ending up in landfills.
“If all residents recycled 10 per cent of their bulky goods through garage sales, car boot sales and online sales, that would save more than 1,000 tonnes of bulky goods material ending up in our landfills each year.
“It’s amazing what people will put out on the nature strip for Council’s clean-up. We’ve heard of valuable furniture, expensive bottles of port wine and even priceless 19th century French dolls.
“Residents are encouraged to use the free Northern Beaches Council Second Hand Saturday service on our website.
“If you hold your Second Hand Saturday garage sale before the Bulky Goods Clean Up, then you can try selling unwanted items before throwing them out, make some money and reduce landfill.
“It really is a win-win,” Mr Taylor said.
