The most northern tip of the Northern Beaches Coast Walk is now complete marking a significant milestone in the construction of the iconic 36km Palm Beach to Manly walkway.
The major section at Palm Beach, from the ferry wharf to Governor Phillip Park, forms one of the formal entry points of the walkway which has been made possible by a $32.6 million infrastructure investment partnership with the NSW Government.
Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan said it was exciting to see the key pieces of the walkway coming together.
“This is a once in a lifetime project which takes in incredible views of our entire coastline and it is exciting to open the northern most tip for the community to use.
“People can now walk safely from Palm Beach Wharf to Governor Phillip Park with more sections of the Coast Walk currently under construction including Warriewood and Turimetta Headland, and works will soon commence along Whale Beach Road.
“Palm Beach is such a drawcard for the region and an important aspect of the track.
“The walk will be a must-do Sydney experience which features a series of accessible sections, cycleways, boardwalks, stairs, footpaths and tracks that lead you to your favourite lookouts, beaches, ocean pools, parks, villages, artworks and public transport links.
“To make this new experience even better, we’ve consulted the community on developing a strategic plan for Public Art along the walkway, bringing the walk alive with art, culture, history and storytelling.
“This section is approximately 560m of pedestrian footpath made from fibre reinforced plastic decking, concrete and structural steel.”
The projects concept was developed by the Palm Beach Working Group which consisted of Council staff, members of the Palm Beach Whale Beach Association, a member of the Pedestrian Council of Australia, Avalon Preservation Association, Palm Beach residents and the Palm Beach Golf Club.
The design review during the construction of the project was carried out by the Aesthetics Advisory Group. This group was made up of three members from the local community that have experience in design in various forms.
When complete the project will deliver 35.5km of new cycleway and shared paths - 12.4km off road and 23.1km on road.
Member for Pittwater Rob Stokes said $14 million has been provided to the Council under the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Fund to help deliver key projects and infrastructure on the northern beaches.
“The walkway at Palm Beach has been sought after for many years so it’s great to see this vision be delivered.
“This part of the State is well known around the world and is a major tourism drawcard. The Manly to Palm Beach walkway will be an incredible asset for visitors and residents alike, offering spectacular views and improved recreational and leisure opportunities.
“The community was involved in identifying the projects funded by the Stronger Communities Fund and I am excited to see the progress of this project and look forward to its completion.” Mr Stokes said.
