Northern Beaches Council will continue to recognise sporting excellence along the Manly Pathway of Olympians and Paralympians by expanding the eligibility criteria for recognition and establishing an online Northern Beaches Sporting Honour Roll to acknowledge other local Australian sport representatives.

This week Council agreed to change to the criteria for recognition on the Manly Pathway of Olympians and Paralympians so residents of the Northern Beaches who have been selected to represent Australia at an Olympic or Paralympic Games since 2016—the year the Northern Beaches community came together under one Council—are eligible for recognition on the Pathway provided they have been a resident of the Northern Beaches for more than five years prior to representation.

The Pathway which is located along East and West Esplanade at Manly recognises a total of 110 athletes to date with space for 150 more plaques to be installed. 

Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said all locals feel a sense of achievement when someone they know has participated in sport at its highest level.

“Expanding the criteria for the Manly Pathway and establishing a Sporting Honour Roll immortalises the dedication, perseverance, and excellence of athletes. 

“It honors their achievements, serving as a timeless tribute that not only recognises their individual prowess but also inspires future generations. 

“It's a celebration of sporting excellence that fosters a sense of pride within a community, encouraging others to aspire, work hard, and contribute their best to the world of sports.” Mayor Heins said.

The Pittwater Hall of Fame which was displayed at the Northern Beaches Indoor Sports Centre until 2015 will also be proudly displayed at a suitable location and our other ways of recognising sporting achievement at the Warringah Aquatic Centre and the annual Australia Day Sportsperson of the Year will continue.

To be eligible to apply to be listed on the Sporting Honour Roll on Council’s website residents who have represented Australia in Olympic, Paralympic, non-Olympic and non-Paralympic sports including competitors, coaches and referees, juniors through to veterans. 

Applicants will be required to meet the criteria including evidence of residency and sporting representation. Applications open 1 July 2024.
