Thousands of ideas and suggestions made during an intensive four-month community consultation exercise have resulted in a strong vision for the much loved Northern Beaches suburb of Avalon.
These ideas are outlined in Spotlight on Avalon - a snapshot document that will become the main framework for the future detailed place plan for Avalon.
Northern Beaches Mayor, Michael Regan said the community’s vision and identified priorities emphasise the uniqueness and close-knit community that characterise the beach-side suburb.
“The Spotlight on Avalon document draws deeply upon local community knowledge, and the specialist skills of our Council staff.
“It references a very wide range of insights, ideas and findings,” he said.
The Avalon community’s six Priorities are:
- Natural environment and sustainability
- Transport
- Community connection and culture
- Economic vibrancy
- Cleanliness and maintenance
- Street design, safety and walkability
“I’m particularly grateful to our specially-formed Avalon Community Reference Group - comprising residents, representatives of local community organisations, local businesses and others - all of whom played a vital part in guiding the Spotlight on Avalon document.
“The Community Reference Group will continue to work with Council to translate the community’s vision, priorities and directions into a detailed Place Plan that is aligned with current and future needs of the area. I look forward to seeing what transpires and continues to make this area unique.” Mayor Regan said.
The Place Plan will be an action-oriented strategy focusing on the community’s “connection to Avalon”, aiming to articulate a clear and compelling vision for Avalon, identify quick wins and convey a longer-term strategy for the future of Avalon.
The Plan will also focus on a zone within 400 metres of Avalon Village Centre, and will take into account the influences from adjacent neighbourhoods.
