Northern Beaches Council Administrator Dick Persson AM adopted the revised Balgowlah Plaza Revitalisation plan at last night’s Council meeting as the final design for Balgowlah Plaza and approved the project to go to tenders to upgrade approximately 560 square metres of Council-owned space along Sydney Road, Balgowlah.
Northern Beaches Council Deputy General Manager, Andrew Pigott, said the revitalisation aims to create a connected public space that will attract a greater retail and dining mix, as well as provide opportunities for the local community and local businesses to gather and promote their activities.
“The Balgowlah Plaza Revitalisation Plan will ensure this shopping precinct will become more economically resilient and community focused into the future.
“The aim is to create a safe, friendly public space within the shopping precinct along Sydney Road through flexible streetscape design, beautification and place-making,” Mr Pigott said.
Balgowlah Plaza fronts commercial and retail premises on the southern side of Sydney Road, Balgowlah between Condamine Street and Jackson Street laneway.
Northern Beaches Council call for tenders comes after extensive community consultation that included a 28-day public exhibition of a revised Balgowlah Plaza Concept Plan.
The Balgowlah Plaza upgrade works will involve the removal of old pavements and street furniture, which will be replaced with better paving, new tree plantings and gardens, new street furniture, improved lighting, and spaces for social interaction, public events, stalls and retail ‘pop-ups’.
The project is funded by the Balgowlah Business Levy through Council.
