Three-thousand runners shrugged off COVID confinement blues and hit the streets today in the annual Sun Run on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
In the largest Northern Beaches post-lockdown community event, runners pounded the street on the 10 kilometre fun run.
Mayor Michael Regan congratulated the winners and all the participants who were clearly happy to enjoy the fresh air and up-beat vibe after a challenging year.
“Today’s event has had a massive positive impact on the morale of the community after enduring in-home isolation for three weeks over the Christmas – New Year break,” Cr Regan said.
“It was tremendous to see so many people enjoying themselves on possibly the most picturesque running route in the country whilst also raising much needed funds for charities across NSW.”
Mayor Regan said this year’s event complied with community sport guidelines under the NSW Health Orders allowing up to 3,000 participants. Our team ensured COVID safety measures were in place including social distancing, hydration stations and hygiene control.
Virtual spectators could use a smartphone app to follow runners’ progress from the comfort of their homes or nearby restaurants.
Sun Run ambassador, former Sea Eagles rugby league star and Manly resident Steve “Beaver” Menzies said it was great to be involved in the Sun Run as an Ambassador for the second year.
“This is such a fantastic community event, not only do you get to run with a magnificent backdrop but it’s so pleasing to see so many people getting involved and keeping active,” Mr Menzies said.
