In what is thought to be an Australian-first collaborative educational program, councils are working together to teach kids about the relationships between coastal, mountain and river water systems.
‘Mountains to Sea’ is a partnership between Northern Beaches, Blue Mountains and Parramatta Councils which will teach students how people and places are connected through waterways.
Year Three students from St Rose Catholic Primary School in Collaroy Plateau will host students from schools in the Blue Mountains and Parramatta Council areas on 18 October as part of the program. They will then visit these inland areas on 9 November.
Northern Beaches Council Mayor Michael Regan said the project was an opportunity for local kids to explore outside the Northern Beaches, as well as to show off our own beautiful coastal environment.
“More than just an excursion, the Mountains to Sea project is a chance for our students to make new friendships, explore inland areas and develop their interest in environmental science.
“This is a fun activity that will emphasise how catchments are linked through waterways. What happens on land impacts our creeks, lagoons, beaches and ocean,” Mr Regan said.
Students will learn about different catchment models by exploring coastal, river and mountain catchments. While on the Northern Beaches, they will visit Long Reef rock platform to learn about coastal environments.
