Following positive feedback from businesses and the community, the Streets as Shared Spaces in Dee Why will continue.
Council has voted to make the pedestrian and traffic changes along The Strand permanent. Council will also look at future projects to improve walkability and parking in the area.
The 12-month Streets as Shared Spaces trial kicked off in August 2021 thanks to funding by the NSW Government. It was extended for another 12 months to allow a thorough assessment to be completed in a traditional summer period, not affected by COVID-19 restrictions and months of wet weather.
The changes included replacing the two-way traffic along the beachfront to one northbound traffic lane, a two-way side-by-side cycleway, a boardwalk and other measures to enhance the amenity of this popular restaurant precinct.
Council will also seek funding to allow the installation of permanent infrastructure along the extent of The Strand and will work with Transport for New South Wales on broader improvements to the walkability of the Dee Why area to assess and refine improvements required to increase the liveability of the area.
