Local sporting identities Bruce “Brucey” Loudon and Harry Marston are to have their names up in lights, in recognition of the many years they dedicated to establishing the Warringah Cricket Club and the Manly Warringah Wolves AFL Club respectively.
Following submissions to the Council by the clubs and public consultation, Council has endorsed the proposal to name the Weldon Oval Grandstand, in John Fisher Park, the Loudon Marston Grandstand. A fitting honour for such dedicated and passionate sports enthusiasts.
The late Mr Loudon was the godfather of Warringah Cricket Club, being one of the founding members in 1977 and the inaugural president. He also held the position of secretary and committee member for many years and established the club in the Metropolitan and Shire competition. The club’s Person of the Year trophy is named after him. Brucey was also instrumental in the South Curl Curl Life Saving Club and the Freshwater Uniting Church, highlighting his dedication to our community. He also contributed time and support to the Northern Beaches Sub-Branch NSW National Servicemen’s Association, including organising many of the Anzac Day, Vietnam Veteran’s Day and Remembrance Day Services.
Mr Marston’s years of service to the Manly Warringah Wolves AFL Club also shows a passion for the community. He was influential in securing the Weldon Oval as the club’s home. A founding member of the club in 1969, he was president for its first 10 years. In 2000, Harry was honoured with the Australian Sports Medal for 30 years of continual service to sport.
Both gentlemen have been integral to the development of their respective sports and clubs and in the establishment of Weldon Oval as a first-class sports facility.
The naming ceremony date is yet to be determined.
