Artist Loui Fraser has recently overseen the bronze casting of her work Crawl, 1997.
The original steel and concrete version of the artwork has been hanging on the exterior of Manly Life Saving Club since it was donated to the former Manly Council by the artist in 2000.
The artwork was slowly deteriorating due to its exposed location, and it was removed from the building and delivered to Australian Bronze at North Head, who cast the work in bronze using the lost-wax casting process.
The artist travelled from her home in Byron Bay to oversee this process, including the creation of the mold and application of bronze patina. The new bronze artwork will be reinstalled on the existing Manly Life Saving Club building, with the aim of incorporating it into the redevelopment of the building in coming years.
Inspired by the artist's fond childhood memories of swimming at Manly, the sculpture celebrates the 'Australian Crawl', contemporary surf club culture and the vital role of life saving in Australia.
