Dive into success: Building a small business with passion and purpose

Turning ocean love into a thriving business – Linda Goodwin, GoodSwim

Learning from successful small business owners can be incredibly insightful. Linda Goodwin, owner of GoodSwim and an ocean swim coach on the Northern Beaches, turned her passion for the ocean into a thriving business. We spoke to Linda about her business journey which offers practical advice and inspiration for any entrepreneur ready to dive in.

What sparked the idea for your ocean swim business, and how did you identify your niche?

My love for swimming began in the pool, thanks to my dad, but the ocean truly captivated me. After living near the beach for nearly 18 years, I spent every day in the water, whether swimming, surfing, or freediving. The idea for my business came during a surf session with a friend who couldn’t swim. That moment made me realise how essential it is to navigate the ocean safely—something many people struggle with, even if they’re confident in a pool.

I recognised a growing demand for ocean swimming lessons, especially during the summer. Many people feel confident in pools but uneasy in the ocean. By offering personalised ocean swim lessons for all skill levels, I carved out a unique space in the market that resonated with my community.

What challenges did you encounter when starting out, and how did you overcome them?

Starting a business presented significant challenges, particularly in merging my passion for swimming with the demands of running a business. I had to learn marketing, scheduling, and finding clients, which wasn’t easy. However, I stayed persistent, relied on word-of-mouth recommendations from the local community, and continuously improved my skills. Focusing on high-quality coaching helped me overcome those early obstacles and build a strong foundation.

How do you keep clients engaged and encourage them to return?

Client retention goes beyond just keeping customers—it’s about empowering them. My goal is to equip each swimmer with the skills and confidence to enjoy the ocean independently. I take an empathetic and professional approach, building trust and lasting relationships. This ensures clients return and spread the word about my services.

Which marketing strategies have been the most effective for you?

Social media has been a game-changer for me. I create engaging reels and posts that showcase my passion for ocean swimming, which resonate with potential clients long after they’re shared. I also use vehicle decals—my signwritten car acts as a mobile billboard, reaching a wider audience just by being parked at the beach. However, word of mouth remains the most powerful marketing tool.

Recommendations from satisfied clients are the highest compliment and a testament to the quality of my coaching. This organic growth has been crucial in establishing a strong reputation.

What are your top marketing tips for other small business owners?

  • High-quality visuals: share authentic photos and videos that highlight real experiences with your services. This builds trust and relatability.
  • Vehicle advertising: use your vehicle as a mobile billboard to increase brand visibility.
  • Personal touch: Keep genuine connections with your clients, ensuring they feel valued and supported.

How do you stay adaptable in running your business?

Running an ocean-based business requires a lot of flexibility. I adapt to changing weather conditions, client schedules, and unexpected challenges. I stay organised, have backup plans, and regularly check in with clients to adjust to their needs. This flexibility ensures smooth operations, no matter what challenges arise.

How do you contribute to the community and prioritise sustainability?

Giving back is important to me. I offer essential swimming lessons to ensure everyone, regardless of age, can enjoy the ocean safely and confidently. Sustainability is also a priority—I use eco-friendly products and encourage beach clean-ups to protect the environment I love.

What are your plans for future growth?

As my business grows, I plan to introduce new services like online stroke analysis to make my coaching accessible to more people. While I aim to expand my client base enough to bring in additional staff, I’m committed to maintaining the personalised service that defines my approach

Why is supporting local businesses so important?

Supporting local businesses is essential for a thriving community. It boosts the local economy, creates jobs, and fosters a sense of belonging. Local businesses offer unique products and services that add to the community’s character and vibrancy. For me, running a small business is about more than just making a profit—it’s about making a positive impact on my community and helping individuals discover the joy and confidence that comes with mastering the ocean.
