Strength in community: How OsteoStrong Manly balanced work-life and quality to build a thriving wellness business

Bringing innovation, wellness, and community connection to build a thriving business

Ashling O’Brien, owner of OsteoStrong Manly, combined her passion for technology and wellness to build a thriving business focused on improving bone health. Her dedication to personalised service has made word-of-mouth referrals her most powerful marketing tool.

“Our members’ results speak for themselves,” says Ashling. “These real-life improvements are our most powerful marketing tool.” Rather than expanding hours to meet demand, she chose to close on Saturdays, prioritising service quality and maintaining her energy.

Ashling shares her inspiring business journey, offering practical advice for those looking to combine passion and skills to run a successful small business.

A unique path to wellness

Ashling’s journey didn’t start in the health industry. She began her career in the tech world, developing efficient backend systems for major corporations like British Telecom and Telstra. But discovering OsteoStrong, a wellness system using cutting-edge technology to improve bone health, ignited her passion to create a space where people could take control of their physical wellbeing

“I’ve always been driven to find efficient solutions through technology, and when I came across OsteoStrong, I was fascinated by how it could help build bone density. I knew it was something I wanted to bring to Manly,” says Ashling.

Overcoming challenges with resilience

Like many small business owners, Ashling faced significant challenges. Just as she was preparing to launch OsteoStrong Manly, COVID-19 restrictions delayed her opening by over 100 days. Despite financial strain and uncertainty, her belief in the service kept her focused.

“There were moments of doubt, but hearing how people are reversing osteoporosis or improving their strength makes every challenge worth it,” she explains.

Growing through authentic connections

For Ashling, the genuine word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied clients have been key to OsteoStrong Manly’s success. Real-life stories of health improvements have boosted credibility and drawn attention from healthcare professionals.

“We’ve been fortunate to receive referrals from both members and doctors who’ve seen the improvements in bone density through DEXA scans. It’s huge validation for what we’re doing,” she adds.

Balancing growth with quality

As the business grew, Ashling realised the importance of balancing success with personal wellbeing. Rather than expanding hours to meet demand, she made the decision to close on Saturdays to maintain service quality and her energy levels.

“I realised that working six days a week wasn’t sustainable. By focusing on core hours, I can give my best to our members and ensure the service remains top quality,” Ashling explains.

Community focus and local collaboration

Ashling’s connection to the Manly community runs deep. As a former president of the Manly Business Chamber and a driving force behind local initiatives like Manly Health and Wellness Day, she’s committed to fostering strong ties in local business and wellness.

“Collaborating with other local businesses has been incredibly rewarding. It’s about supporting each other and creating a strong, healthy community,” she says.

Looking ahead

Reflecting on her journey, Ashling acknowledges she'd approach things differently if given the chance.  "Absolutely, I wouldn't have spread myself so thin. I'd allow more time for self-care and rest. By the time I decided to reduce our hours, I was already nearing burnout."

Every challenge has strengthened her determination, and the relationships she’s built with members and the wider community continue to fuel her passion for OsteoStrong Manly. Moving forward, Ashling is prioritising self-care and managing her energy. By taking better care of herself, she can provide quality service to members more effectively.

“I’m so proud of the positive impact we’re making here in Manly. It’s a privilege to help people improve their health, and I look forward to continuing this journey with our amazing members,”.
