Northern Beaches Council is inviting the community to team up with Council’s wildlife experts to see forest creatures come to life during a free spotlight adventure walk through the Swamp Mahogany Forest, South Creek and Narrabeen trail on Friday, 7 April from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
Northern Beaches Council’s Senior Biodiversity Officer Brendan Smith said the group will be on the lookout for Owls, Gliders, Possums, Bats, Tawny Frogmouths and much more.
“People really enjoy night walks because of the unexpected creatures you might see. The Swamp Mahogany and Bangalay Forests we explore on the tour are home to some seldom seen fauna such as Owls that have been spotted there.
“The tour is relatively informal, allowing community members to learn more about our local flora and fauna, while enjoying a bit of nocturnal adventure,” Mr Smith said.
The ‘Forest Creatures of the Night’ tour is suitable for all ages, being an easy trail taking around 1.5 hours, with frequent stops.
By providing a good, general introduction to local wildlife and how to find it, the tour should be especially interesting for children, who must be accompanied by an adult.
“The tour party will learn the importance of tree hollows as homes for native animals including the value of trees hollows in the backyard.
“We have recorded animal-calls on hand, too, so tour party members can learn how to recognise some of the creatures they hear at night,” he said.
The tour party will also be shown what Council is doing to restore the swamp forests, and explain why their conservation is so important.
