Established local multi-faceted artist and producer Kate Butcher has been selected as the 2024 Artist in Residence at Eramboo Artist Environment in Terrey Hills.
Nestled on the edge of the Ku-ring-gai National Park, Eramboo has been a haven for creativity for decades. This residency provides a peaceful sanctuary for artists in the middle of the bush, using the natural surroundings as inspiration.
This opportunity includes a six-month residency, $3,000 allowance for materials, mentorship and community engagement opportunities, and an opportunity to exhibit work at the end of the residency.
Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said the residency provides a unique experience for an artist to research, experiment and develop new work.
“Council’s long-standing support for this unique opportunity has resulted in many amazing artists producing innovative, inspiration and iconic works of art,” Mayor Heins said.
“Eramboo’s unique location gives artists an opportunity to disconnect from our fast-paced urban environment, experiment creatively and develop their professional practice in a collaborative studio environment. Congratulations to Kate. I look forward to seeing what you produce.”
Ms Butcher, who normally works between Finland and the Northern Beaches, said during her residency she will leverage spatial scanning as both a technique and a method for mapping and shaping space to explore the dramatic composition of artistic practice.
“I’m so thrilled to be chosen for this residency. My primary focus will revolve around two key frames: 'nature and destroyed landscapes' and 'society and concentrations' contemplating what kind of artistic experiences and actions we can establish with inclusiveness and sustainability in mind,” Ms Butcher said.
“This contemplation necessitates an examination of the detrimental substrates created by human actions on Earth and questioning the potential risks and positive contributions that art can make in shaping future solutions that foster collaboration between human and ecological relationships.”
Local artists and audiences will have the opportunity to engage with Kate’s work throughout her residency. This will include workshops exploring new technologies in creative practice, an exhibition of the residency outcomes, and a mentorship with Kate for local emerging artists.
Keep an eye on Council’s What’s On calendar, and subscribe to Creative News, to be the first to hear about these events and opportunities.
The residency will conclude in June 2024. Read more about the artist here.
