As part of the first stage of the Dee Why Town centre revitalisation project, Northern Beaches Council Administrator Dick Persson AM will officially open the $4.5 million upgrade of Walter Gors Park in Dee Why on Tuesday, 11 April.
The park between Howard Avenue and Dee Why Parade on the eastern side of Pittwater Road is bigger and better thanks to a major rejuvenation by Northern Beaches Council.
Mr Persson said upgrading and expanding Walter Gors Park was essential given the huge increase in unit accommodation in Dee Why.
“The expanded and improved park is three times its original size and will allow for a real range of different activities. It will be the ‘backyard’ for many families living in units in and around Dee Why.
“As the person who started the planning for this project, I am very proud of the final result and I would encourage the community to come down and enjoy it,” Mr Persson said.
Features of the upgrade include a large grassed area, children’s playground, nature play area, community herb garden, outdoor fitness and kitchen area, improved seating, a playground, accessible toilets, water feature and multiple trees and other plants.
The park is named in honour of Walter Gors who was a World War I veteran who worked for Warringah Council for many years, starting as Deputy Shire Clerk in 1926 and retiring as Shire Clerk around 1958. Information and signage about Mr Gors is part of the park upgrade.
To mark the opening of Walter Gors Park, a community event is being hosted by Northern Beaches Council on Tuesday 11 April from 11am to 2pm.
