After strong community feedback Northern Beaches Council is making changes to improve access to car parking for residents at Pittwater Park in Palm Beach. Council is also conducting a parking demand management study for the precinct to seek to better manage the high parking demand in this area.
As part of the improvements, the area known as Pittwater Park south will see 17 spaces changed to 4 hour parking on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays to provide shorter term parking for recreational use of Pittwater Park and the surrounding precinct.
Residents with valid Northern Beaches parking permits will still be able to park for free on weekends in the remaining spaces.
However Northern Beaches Non-Resident Parking Permits will not be valid Saturday, Sunday and public holidays for all parking spaces, freeing up space for residents.
Administrator, Dick Persson said "The Palm Beach and Whale Beach Association raised their frustration about valuable beach access parking spaces being taken up all weekend by commuters leaving their work vehicles when they catch the ferry home. I undertook to fix the problem when I met them in June and these changes deliver on that undertaking".
Other improvements include resurfacing of the carpark, new line markings, relocating disabled car parking spaces and improving footpath and pedestrian access.
"Once complete, the upgraded carpark will significantly improve parking arrangements for those who regularly visit the park.
Changes to the parking restrictions will take place after the completion of upgrade works to the carpark, scheduled for October.
"Importantly Council is also reviewing all parking arrangements for the precinct with a study soon to commence to identify solutions to managing the increasingly high parking demand in this area," Mr Persson added.
