Northern Beaches Council has enlisted more than 70 enthusiastic pet owners in a trial aimed at reducing our reliance on the use of plastic bags.
During the four month trial, each pet owner will be given an in ground pet poo composting bin, replacing the need for single use plastic bags.
"Northern Beaches residents are passionate about their animals and the environment, " said Northern Beaches Council's Education Officer, Tanya Leishman.
"Council Officers will evaluate the trial to measure the effectiveness of the composting system and pet owners will be asked to fill out surveys before and after the trial.
"Pet Owners participating in the trial will receive a Yard Art Pet Poo composting worm farm, aerator," Ms Leishman added.
"Pet poo can't be used on vegetable gardens as there is a risk of contamination. This in ground composting system enables residents to compost their pet poo directly into the soil safely," she said.
Residents have been collecting their composting kits from Warriewood this week, and will also be collecting them on Saturday 24 September from the Coastal Environment Centre Open Day.
The trial will be on display at the annual Dog Day by the Bay on Sunday 13 November at Rowland Reserve, Bayview.
