The Northern Beaches relies on its roads to keep the community connected, but relentless wet weather earlier this year combined with heavy traffic are pushing them to the limit.
Heavy traffic leads to surface cracks and depressions, while rain and storms lead to water seeping into those cracks, eroding the base layers beneath the asphalt. When this happens, the surface can deteriorate and form potholes.
Since 1 July 2025, the funding from the Special Variation to Rates has allowed Council to step up its road renewal and maintenance programs, extending the life of damaged roads and improving safety for road users.
So far, we’ve completed 3.8km of road renewals across 12 streets and crews are currently working on another 6.1km across 19 streets thanks to the additional funding.
This complements our regular program of works, which has delivered 2.8km of renewed road across 14 streets during the same period.
Essential maintenance works has also increased to keep our roads functional.
From 1 July to 30 September, our crews have:
- filled 1,153 potholes
- sealed 37,500 lineal metres of cracks across 49 roads
- repaired 5,600 square metres of road surface through heavy patching on 22 roads.
