Student outcomes

The students will learn to:

  • analyse the impact of human activity on the natural world SC5-ENV-01
  • select and use scientific tools and instruments for accurate observations SC5-WS-01
  • follow a planned procedure to undertake safe, ethical, valid and reliable investigations SC5-WS-04
  • analyse data from investigations to identify trends, patterns and relationships, and draws conclusions SC5-WS-06
  • select suitable problem-solving strategies and evaluate proposed solutions to identified problems SC5-WS-07

Outline

This field trip aims to extend students’ understanding of the impact of human activity on the natural world by examining factors affecting the water quality in Greendale Creek which feeds into Curl Curl lagoon.

Skills and Activities

This program is in development and activities listed are subject to change.

Activities have been designed to give students opportunities to generate and analyse different datasets to identify trends and patterns and select suitable strategies to evaluate and propose solutions to the water quality and flooding-related problems at Greendale Creek.

  • Abiotic water testing for a range of parameters (Nitrates, Nitrites, Ammonia, Phosphates, turbidity, visible pollution, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature)
  • Biodiversity survey of the water and riparian zones of Greendale Creek.
  • AUSMAP Microplastics survey at the lagoon entrance, North Curl Curl
  • Inspection of the Gross Pollutant Trap and analysis of the catchment and impact Brookvale industrial area
  • Identify causes of climate change and investigate the possible effects of climate change on weather patterns, and water within the Greendale Creek catchment.
  • Summary activity focused on solution to the problems

Key ideas

  • Non-renewable resources
  • Sustainability
  • Environmental pollution
  • Recycling
  • Climate change
  • Greenhouse effect
  • Global emissions and atmospheric temperatures

Bookings

Please note: Groups of more than 90 will be split into 2 groups that start at either end of Greendale Creek in Curl Curl so as to avoid congestion at each end.

Ideally, this program will run between 9:30am and 2:00pm, however, the program is adaptable to fit in with your bus times. We will provide bus directions after confirmation.
