To convolute is to twist, change and disrupt an environment or object. Through manipulation of daily objects and materials, Joshua Copland-Nielsen refers to the indexical trait and mark left on objects such as chairs, foam and domestic materials from household spaces.

With a Bachelor in Art Theory at UNSW Art & Design (2019) and recently completing his Master of Fine Art in Printmaking at The National Art School (2023), his first solo exhibition Convoluted invites viewers to the insight of dealing with grief and decay. Through playful visualisations, materials and objects, the artist invites you to ponder a deeper meaning behind the object, its historic narrative and how we relate to the dealings of grief through both serious vernacular and conversation, as well as via display of tongue and cheek.

Honing from the traditional formats of printmaking to playfully exploring ways of manipulating materials to the three-dimensional and via multimedia art, Copland-Nielsen discusses his concepts through a variety of material output.
