Inauguration speech 2024
Good evening, everybody.
Look, I wanted to start by sharing a moment that still makes me smile. One Sunday night, a few months ago, Councillor Williams called me unexpectedly. I looked across the room to my wife while murmuring at him, stuff about council, and she immediately mouthed, "No." But despite her playful protest, that call was the beginning of an amazing journey, which has led me to standing here today. It's an honour and a privilege to be here as a newly elected Councillor for the Curl Curl Ward. I want to begin by expressing my heartfelt gratitude to the people who made this possible.
First of all, my family. Thank you for all your support behind the scenes for helping practically and for politely listening when I talked endlessly about elections, Council matters, and more. Our amazing volunteers, 64 volunteers, came out of the woodwork to help us in Curl Curl. And your passion, energy, and commitment, are what made this all possible. I'm so proud to be part of such a devoted team.
To my fellow candidates, to Councillors Hackman and Glanville, and also to Jasper Thatcher, I want to acknowledge your hard work and dedication. We may have different approaches, but we all share a common goal, to serve our community. I look forward to working with all of you to achieve the best outcomes for the Northern Beaches.
To the Northern Beaches Council staff, thank you for making me feel so welcome already, I'm truly impressed with your dedication, your hard work, dedication to the community, and your absolute patience with us new Councillors who really don't know what we're doing yet. And finally, to your Northern Beaches Independent Team, for their support and guidance throughout the campaign. Your dedication to our community is truly inspiring.
I want to change gears a little bit and talk about being an Independent Candidate in politics. I come from a line of Independent politicians, my mum was one. And being an Independent is both a responsibility and an opportunity. Independents, I believe, are uniquely positioned to offer genuine unfiltered representation, 'cause we're not bound by any ideology. We're free to focus on the needs of our community and advocate for what's right, not well, just what's politically expedient. I believe true representation means listening to all voices, regardless of where people stand on the political spectrum.
As your Councillor I will be here to represent the entire community, not just those who voted for me. I promise to listen to your concerns, take them seriously, and ensure that every voice is heard. I'll consult with experts on every issue, and I'm going to make decisions based on the best available evidence and the needs of the community without external pressures or preconceived ideas. I'm committed to working tirelessly to ensure the Northern Beaches continues to thrive. It's my mission to help keep our community inclusive, vibrant, and sustainable. Thank you for placing your trust in me. I look forward to serving you all and making a real difference on the Northern Beaches.
Thank you.
