Australian organist Darren Heinrich showcases his mastery of the Hammond B3 on this compelling collection, recorded in Prague with guitarist Libor Šmoldas and drummer Jesse Simpson. Heinrich, who holds the world’s first PhD in Jazz Organ Improvisation, brings crystal-clear articulation and dynamic sensitivity to eleven original compositions that honour and expand the organ trio tradition.

Born in Sydney, Heinrich discovered his calling after hearing Jimmy Smith’s Crazy! Baby, eventually studying with masters Tony Monaco and Dr Lonnie Smith. The Prague Sessions, recorded after five gigs that tightened the trio’s chemistry, reveal Heinrich’s distinctive compositional voice combining elegant structures with modern flourishes.

Highlights include the infectious title track showcasing Heinrich’s masterful dynamic control, the soul-jazz influenced Barrenjoey Boogaloo (named for his street), and the poignant ballad Bowen’s Lament honouring an Aboriginal police tracker. The album balances technical mastery with emotional directness, from the racing Bluebottles through rhythm changes to the gentle closing Claudia’s Song.

Throughout, Heinrich finds fresh colours within the organ’s sonic palette while maintaining the instrument’s characteristic warmth, creating his most definitive artistic statement to date.
