Long Reef Bushcare (Reefcare) formed in 1992, after gaining a grant to provide an information brochure on the flora and fauna on the headland and aquatic reserve.

Over the years, the group has progressed from weed removal at Fisherman's Beach, the dunes behind the Long Reef Surf Club and the western end of Griffith Park to concentrating on the Long Reef Headland area.

Over the last 15 years or so, works have been focused to remove Bitou Bush on site and re-establish the original Themeda grassland – the only grassland restoration project in the area. The group is achieving this goal through revegetation of locally indigenous species and a focus on habitat conservation and aboriginal heritage protection.

The group has won many awards over the years, including from Warringah Council, the Clean Beach Council, and the Keep Australia Beautiful Council (NSW). Additionally further restoration of the site progressed through the successful provision of grants from NSW EPA, Coastcare and the Natural Heritage Trust, totalling over $200,000 over the last 30 years.

Lisa Calder, who has been a long standing volunteer at the site, has said “I love going to bush regeneration, as Reefcare works in a beautiful location and it clears my head more than meditation. I feel so good afterward, mentally and physically.  A huge plus is that I am making a difference to a picturesque spot, removing Bitou bush on site with huge benefits for native fauna and flora.”

Long Reef Bushcare Group always welcomes new volunteers, with new members able to join the group on the first Saturday of each month.
